THE MDDA WELCOMES PROF. R. MAHABEER AS THE AUDIT AND RISK COMMITTEE CHAIRPERSON

The Board of the MDDA is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor
Rajesh Mahabeer as the Audit and Risk Committee (ARC) Chairperson for a three-
year term effective from 03 October 2024. Professor Mahabeer’s wealth of
knowledge, and his set of diverse skills will strengthen the agency’s Executive
Authority in discharging its responsibilities towards achieving the MDDA mandate to
promote media diversity through the growth of a sustainable community media
sector in South Africa.
In his illustrious career the Professor has applied his vast experience in corporate
governance, King IV, strategy, auditing, accounting, finance, ICT, IFRS, GRAP,
taxation, legal, ethics, and human resources, amongst others, to the boards he
serves. He has also held the position of Chief Financial Officer at Walter Sisulu
University, Auditor General South Africa, and South African National Parks, which
led to his nomination for the Best CFO in the Public Sector award in 2017 by CFO
South Africa.
The MDDA Board Chairperson, Professor Hlengani Mathebula thanked the former
ARC Chairperson, Ms D. Hlatshwayo, for her support, guidance and diligent service
for the duration of her brief tenure.
In welcoming the incoming ARC Chairperson, he commented, “the Board looks
forward to working with Prof Mahabeer as he will strongly complement the Board’s
existing skills in assisting the local media, successfully negotiate the current, very
dynamic media landscape.”
Professor Mahabeer has joined the MDDA at a crucial time in the development of
the community media sector, which is faced with significant changes in the form of
the rapid technological advances, and the tightening economic conditions, leading to
big media houses making significant changes to its newsrooms. Despite all these
challenges, the community media sector is still expected to play a greater public
information role, especially as communities familiarise themselves with the new
Government of National Unity (GNU).
